Winter Gifts For Climbers

I know your delima. You think, “What gift can I get for a rock climber?”, “What gift does a mountain biker need?”, “What gift can I buy a hiker?”. Our adventures include equipment and preferences that vary widely. But, here are some gifts that should for almost every outdoor adventurer.

LAST MINUTE GIFTS FOR OUTDOOR ADVENTURERS

HOT HANDS – $
Hot hands are perfect for ANY outdoor adventurer! From hiking to biking to rock climbing to hunting, you can’t have too many Hot Hands! For rock climbers, hands are hard to keep warm. We do well with clothing, but our hands are still on cold rock! We put hot hands in our chalk bag and in our jacket pockets to keep our hards warm while climbing. You can never go wrong with Hot Hands for a winter gift! And, they are cheap!

EPIC WIPES – $
Baby wipes are an essential product for outdoor adventurers. Trust me, we get dirty! Instead of using A LOT of wipes to clean, Epic Wipes offers the opportunity to use and manage one towel-size wipe!

ADVENTURE SOCKS – $
Keeping your feet dry and warm is the key to being happy on any adventure! Cotton socks keeps our feet sweaty and cold. But, adventure socks are made from materials like wool, and other products, are vented, and wick moister away from your feet. There are many adventure sock companies on the market. Smart Wool is one of the largest. Adventure socks brand Stoke Signal adds reflectors for visibility while riding bikes in the dark or low light conditions.

ARC’TEREX BIRD HEAD TOQUE BEANIE – $$
On an adventure, a standard beanie from the mall doesn’t work! They are too thick, too thin, or not vented properly. I recommend the Arc’terex Bird Head beanie. It has warm fleece insulation on your lower half to wicks sweat and moisture away from your head. But, it is not insulated on the top of the head to let excess heat escape.

PACKPILLOW – $$
This product can be used as a super lightweight seat, a pillow, and/or to carry gear in. For me, using the PackPillow as a pillow is great because I like a low-profile pillow. But, if you like a thicker pillow, the PackPillow unzips to add t-shirts and other soft clothes in. It is surprisingly comfortable!

LANDER MOAB PHONE CASE – $$
Protection provided by phone cases vary from case to case. Lander, using ThermoLine technology, claims its “Moab” case keeps a phone’s temperature far more stable and its battery from being drained as fast in cold environments. If you spend time in the outdoors when it is cold, you will notice your battery drains extremely fast. My testing of the Moab has shown a slight boost in battery life.

This very affordable and light pack would work for any adventurer! It’s a small backpack without a frame and includes a pocket for storing a hydration bladder.

OSPREY SIRRUS 24 (WOMEN) STRATOS 24 PACK (MEN) – $$$
Similar to the REI Flash Pack, these packs are light and small. But, they offer more room than the flash pack. Perfect for day hikes, carrying water and snacks while biking. When climbing, a harness, shoes, and other gear fit perfectly.

SALEWA HYBRID 2 JACKET – $$$
Being dry and comfortable in the outdoors can be difficult. Puffy coats keep you warm, but sometimes too warm. Vests keep your body warm, but arms wet and cold. Salewa has introduced the Hybrid 2 Jacket with Primaloft insulation on the torso and a stretchable and water-resistant fabric on the sleeves to keep arms dry and protected without excess insulation or weight.

Thanksgiving week is a time for family, food, football, and the outdoors. I'm glad to be spending part of my week with my parents, aunt, sister, and brother-in-law hiking the Cosby area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This area of the park is very underutilized! I'm also testing gear for Salewa, a family-owned company with exceptional products and a high standard for quality. You have seen me in Salewa hiking boots since the company's US release a few years ago. But, Fall 2017 marks the first time the Italian-based company has released apparel in the US, despite having a long history in places like Europe. In my home base of Knoxville, @riversports already has the apparel in stock. Other specialty retailers across the US offer it, or will offer it as the company expands its markets. My first impression of the new Salewa Hybrid 2 Men's Jacket and the MTN Trainer Mid GTX boot is they are both outstanding! This jacket has Primaloft insulation, is breathable, light, water resistant, warm, and very comfortable. I stood in deep and icy water, high on the Gortex boot, for about 2-minutes with my feet staying dry and comfortable. The aggressive tread and Vibram sole handled steep terrain, roots, rocks, and creek crossings very well. I am glad the company sent me these products to test. As always, I am very impressed with Salewa and this area of the Smokies! They never disappoint and I recommend both! #getvertical #salewa

I should have thought of that Jessica!!! I’ll add it to next year’s list!

  • Great recommendations! I love my Osprey day hike pack, and we’ve got a rare bit of snow here in the Southeastern US so hot hands are in high demand!

Hot Hands are on top because they are cheap, easy to find, and everyone needs them! It’s rare to find an outdoors person who doesn’t need them at some point. Even Miami gets cold in the winter months and surfers use them when they get out of the water!

  • You’ve got some great products on here. I’m going to check out the pack pillow for sure!

I like the PackPillow a lot! It replaces a needed chair and doubles as a pillow! That removes an item I need to carry!
